Skowhegan is one of those small New England towns that quietly packs a surprising amount of history, culture, and character into its riverside setting. One of the most fascinating things about Skowhegan is its name, which comes from an Abenaki word often interpreted as “watching place” or “place to watch for fish.” This makes sense given its location by the river, where Native Americans once gathered to fish and observe seasonal migrations. Long before European settlers arrived, the area was an important meeting and fishing ground for indigenous peoples, giving the town a deep cultural foundation that still resonates today.

In the 19th century, Skowhegan became a thriving mill town. For a time, it was one of the busiest industrial centers in Maine. One of Skowhegan’s most iconic landmarks is the impressive Skowhegan Indian Monument. Standing 62 feet tall, it is believed to be the largest wooden Indian statue in the United States. Built in 1969, the statue honors the area’s Native American heritage and has become a recognizable symbol of the town. It overlooks the river, tying together the past and present in a very visual way.
